Pleural Mesothelioma

Asbestos is the main cause of the dangerous nature of cancer, mesothelioma. The majority of reported cases of mesothelioma have a history of substance exposure to asbestos behind. Then also, cases have been reported rarely in breast cancer where there has been no participation of asbestos particles. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that can be separated into threads fine. It is widely used in industries such as cement, brake linings, roof shingles, products flooring, textiles and insulation. Many workers have been unfortunate victims of mesothelioma asbestos because of the wide use of the mineral.

During the manufacturing process, the asbestos particles disperse in the air. Serious health risks occur among workers when they inhale or swallow without knowing it. It is also found that exposure to asbestos coupled with smoking increases the risk of getting affected by cancer. There were millions of American workers who were exposed to the material since early’40s. The workers include those in mines and mills, the shipbuilding industry, heating and construction, etc.

The risk of diseases related to asbestos increases with excessive exposure to asbestos. However, there are exceptions such as individuals with a brief exposure to asbestos developing mesothelioma and a few others who are at high risk develop the disease. Asbestos has been mined and used commercially since the late’00s. Initially, the risks associated with asbestos were not known. Once the link between cancer and asbestos has been put in place various laws came into existence for the welfare of workers. Limits have been set for acceptable levels of asbestos exposure in the workplace.

Asbestos has not left even the family members and loved ones of other workers. They have also become unfortunate victims of particles, which are formed by workers at home without knowing their clothes and hair. But some security measures adopted recently include that workers should shower and change cloths before leaving the factory.

It was noted that detection of asbestos mesothelioma is a difficult process because the symptoms appear very late. The similarity of symptoms with other diseases is also correct diagnosis almost impossible. Medical technology has advanced greatly giving new hope to victims and their relatives. But a complete cure remains a distant dream.
