Pleural MesotheliomaPleural mesothelioma is the most common type of malignant mesothelioma. About two thirds of people diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma have type. This form of mesothelioma affects the cells in the pleura, the name given to the garrisons of the lungs and chest cavity. The pleura has two layers: the parietal layer (an outer layer that covers the chest cavity and diaphragm) and the visceral layer (an inner layer that covers the lungs).
Exposure to Asbestos

People who are exposed to asbestos inhale asbestos fibers that enter lower case in the pleura of the lungs. Once in the lungs, asbestos fibers cause changes in the pleural cells making them cancerous. (more…)

Thoracic Surgery and Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Friday, March 26th, 2010

THORACIC SURGERYMalignant pleural mesothelioma can be diagnosed through a minimally invasive surgery called video-review: “the test – said Dr. Mark Alloisio, Head of Thoracic Surgery Humanitas – is symptomatic treatment as well as diagnostic, as during surgery the supernatant pleural fluid relieved the patient.

Furthermore, more studies emphasize how the Tri-modal approach is the most effective therapy against mesothelioma. This treatment uses chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy, and has tripled survival.

From the surgical point of view – Alloisio says – a statement is now being represented by extra pleural penumonectomia, which allows the removal of the pleura, the lung and the pericardium and diaphragm. (more…)

Pleural Mesothelioma Pemetrexed combined with cisplatin in the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma

The FDA has approved pemetrexed (Alimta) in combination with cisplatin for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.

This form of cancer is usually associated with exposure to asbestos (asbestos).
When the patient feels the symptoms, the cancer is already well advanced, and survival is only 9-13 months.

The efficacy of pemetrexed has been demonstrated during a clinical trial.
Patients treated with pemetrexed and cisplatin survived longer than patients treated only with cisplatin (12 months versus 9, respectively). (more…)

Pleural Mesothelioma : Symptoms And Diagnosis

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Pleural MesotheliomaPleural Mesothelioma is a form of cancer is not easily diagnosed because symptoms are not specific which can be neglected for a long time. When pleural mesothelioma is properly diagnosed, often the cancer has already reached a level of development and the process of metastasis may already be in progress and have involved other organs.

Correct diagnosis (histological type of pleural mesothelioma, stage of development …) allows you to set an appropriate remedy.

Italian Group for Mesothelioma together basic researchers and clinicians actively engaged in research, pre-clinical and clinical, related to this malignancy in its various forms, pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal, or rare benign forms. (more…)

What Is Malignant Mesothelioma

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Malignant MesotheliomaHe has not talked much about this disease, in that it is one of the cancers are not as common and widespread.

It is a cancerous tumor in the lining of the lung cavity and thorac (commonly called the pleura) or the lining of the abdomen (commonly called the peritoneum) and that is typically due to prolonged exposure to asbestos. (more…)

Pleural Mesothelioma

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Pleural MesotheliomaPleural Mesothelioma is the most common, its incidence being 9 times higher than the peritoneal mesothelioma.

It is more common in men than in women, being the age of onset of symptoms between 50 to 70 years with a latency period of 20 to 40 years. In 80% of cases the etiology is exposure to asbestos dust.

Other possible causes of mesothelioma are radiation therapy and polio vaccines contaminated with simian virus SV40. The pleural mesothelioma is about 3% of malignant neoplasms of the pleura, and when the diagnosis is made rapidly and its course is invariably fatal, usually during the next two years. (more…)

What is Mesothelioma Cancer?

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Mesothelioma is a rare and virulent cancer of the mesothelial surfaces, which affects the lining of the lungs (pleura), the abdominal cavity (peritoneum) or the lining around the heart (pericardium).
Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to mineral fibers (asbestos, for example).
Some have been exposed to their work and secondarily by other family members who unwittingly, have reduced fiber to the home of their work in their clothes or their hair or on their skin.

Most often mesothelioma cancer is the result of exposure from 20 to 50 years or more ago.

Malignant Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that starts in the mesothelium, a membrane that covers and protects most internal organs of the body.
The mesothelium is composed of two layers, one surrounding the body itself, and the other forms a sac around it completely. A small amount of fluid is normally produced between these two layers, lubricating the motion of bodies protected. (more…)

Some facts on mesothelioma disease and how it can be defeated or prevented

Mesothelioma is a potential fatal disease that humanity faces today. Cancer is commonly called a disease Mesothelioma is caused by inhaling asbestos fibers for the period of time. In many cases, patients do not survive more than two years after diagnosis. The symptoms appear very late and it is almost impossible for early detection and effective treatment.

Asbestos, a mineral widely used in industries, is highly toxic. The floating fibers, once inhaled, settling in the mesothelium, a protective membrane that sheaths in the cavities of our vital organs. These particles make the mucosal cells to divide without order and any excess liquid formed due to the thicker walls of the organs, thus affecting their functioning.

Dyspnea, cough, weakness, malaise and fatigue are usually in advanced stages of disease. In 89% of cases, the abnormal electrocardiogram abnormalities being more frequent sinus tachycardia (42%), ventricular or atrial arrhythmias (17%) and blockage of a branch bundle (30%)
