Mesothelioma and Lung CancerWhat is the difference between mesothelioma and lung cancer?

The easiest way to understand the difference between lung cancer and mesothelioma is that lung cancer is in the lung tissue, while pleural mesothelioma occurs in the layer of tissue that covers the outside of the lung.

Smoking is considered the primary cause of lung cancer and asbestos as the primary cause of mesothelioma. Asbestos can also cause lung cancer. Smoking does not cause mesothelioma. People who have been exposed to asbestos and also smoke have up to 90 times more likely to be affected with lung cancer than those who do not smoke

Pleural mesothelioma: The Sad Legacy Of Asbestos

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects cells earnest arising from mesothelial cells lining. Mostly they are located pleural and peritoneal.
Valerio Gennaro, physician in charge of the register Ligurian exposed to asbestos in the meeting of the IAEA data showed that in the provinces of La Spezia cases of mesothelioma are above average even when compared to other provinces of Genoa and Liguria.

The risk factors of mesothelioma is exposure (and in particular inhalation), asbestos, asbestos, exposure to thorium dioxide (thorotrast) for diagnostic purposes and the zeolite. In particular, the majority (70%) of inhaled fibers being eliminated in the sputum or feces. (more…)

Diseases caused by Asbestos

Asbestos mainly affects the lungs and lining of the lungs, the pleura. Asbestos causes two main types of diseases: cancer and asbestosis.

Asbestosis

Breathing high levels of asbestos fibers have long or short exposure to high levels of asbestos can cause scarring lesions that appear in the lung and pleura. This disease is called asbestosis, lung was the first disease that was associated with asbestos and can cause disability and death.

It is defined as diffuse interstitial fibrosis of the lungs resulting from exposure to asbestos dust and, therefore, commonly occurs in workers exposed to asbestos. People with asbestosis because of the scars in the lungs, difficulty breathing, often a cough, and in severe cases suffer enlarged heart.

Benefits of Alimta in Patients with Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Data from two large studies show that open patients had survival rates at one year than 50% when treated with ALIMTA (R) (pemetrexed for injection) or with plans to base of ALIMTA for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) in both first and second line. The study results demonstrate significant benefits in efficiency and safety for ALIMTA Eli Lilly and Company, the only known agent demonstrating a survival benefit in this disease often difficult to treat and is mainly linked to exposure to asbestos. The data were presented today at the Twelfth World Conference on Lung Cancer.

One of the largest studies undertaken on the treatment of mesothelioma, this study three-arm, open, multicenter trial for (WCLC Abstract No. C5-01) consisted of patients treated with ALIMTA alone, arm, and combination with either cisplatin or carboplatin in the other two arms. The three arms showed survival rates at one year clinically similar (58.6% for ALIMTA alone, 63.1% for ALIMTA + cisplatin, and 64.0% for ALIMTA + carboplatin). The arms of ALIMTA plus platinum combination therapy achieved response rates higher ALIMTA alone (10.5% for ALIMTA; 26.3% for ALIMTA + cisplatin and 21.7% for ALIMTA + carboplatin). All 2023 patients treated in first intention had a histological or cytological diagnosis (the patient’s cells were examined under a microscope) of MPM that was not compatible with curative surgery.

A Survey of Asbestos Disease Mesothelioma

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

What is asbestos?

Asbestos disease, mesothelioma cancers, lung cancer and asbestosis are the diseases caused by asbestos because asbestos is different naturally occurring fibrous minerals in some rocks and soils. It has found wide application in industry and construction materials such as fire, roof shingles, electric insulation, furnace, hot Ceiling and Pipe Friction Products Recent studies show. However, showed that exposure to asbestos harmful health effects that make asbestos disease and mesothelioma for workers in the industrial use of asbestos as well as those that may expose workers to asbestos in the environment of such places life can inhale fine particles in the air. They are also exposed through skin contact with asbestos or by swallowing asbestos fibers while these workers are particularly vulnerable to diseases such as asbestos, mesothelioma and asbestosis Serious Effects of Asbestos Disease Mesothelioma.
