TREATMENT

There is no consensus in the literature about the management of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma, due in large part to the lack of data supporting a single treatment modality or combination thereof to provide a clear improvement in survival or quality of life on palliative treatment. Chemotherapy extends life in pleural mesothelioma
For patients with the drug so far as little as a controllable current malignant pleural mesothelioma, there is now a treatment option. Studies have shown that the antifolate pemetrexed in combination with cisplatin can prolong the survival of these patients.
Pemetrexed (Alimta ®) was approved in September for the indication for pleural mesothelioma and second-line chemotherapy in advanced cancer. It is the first drug that has an approval in Europe for the treatment of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma.
In a large Phase III trial survived the patients who received pemetrexed and cisplatin had an average of twelve months. Untreated patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma usually die within months after diagnosis. Just over half the patients treated with pemetrexed and cisplatin was, after a year still alive. Of the patients in the control group who received only cisplatin, at that time lived only 38 percent. (more…)

Mesothelioma: A Protein Helps Prognosis And Chemotherapy
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010
The Institute Regina Elena for several years studying the role in cancer biology of a protein called human HtrA1 serine protease, which appears to be altered in pathological situations, either inflammatory-degenerative tumor.
The research group of Professor Alfonso Baldi, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Second University of Naples, in collaboration with the Cancer Institute Regina Elena, was the first to characterize the role of HtrA1 as a tumor suppressor, as the high HtrA1 expression in tumor cells reduces the proliferation and migration capacity of these cells. Surgical Treatment of Malignant Mesothelioma Part. II
Saturday, February 20th, 2010Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy involves using anticancer drugs that act by preventing cancer cells from multiplying. In most cases, combinations of drugs are used to increase efficiency. Chemotherapy can be used aggressively to reduce the tumor or palliative to relieve symptoms such as breathlessness or pain. Chemotherapy can be administered by injection into a vein or muscle, ingestion, or can sometimes be administered directly into the pleural or peritoneal cavity.
The drugs most commonly used are:
* Pemetrexed (Alimta)
* Cisplatin (Platinol)
* Carboplatin (Paraplatin)
* Gemcitabine (Gemzar)
* Doxorubicin (Adriamycin)
Mitomycin *
* Raltitrexed (Tomudex)
* Vinorelbine (Navelbine)

How to Treat Cancer by Asbestos
Saturday, February 6th, 2010Chemotherapy is not effective for treating patients with asbestos-related cancer, say British scientists.
Malignant mesothelioma caused by exposure to asbestos, a mineral that was commonly used as building material-is often incurable.
But some experts thought that chemotherapy could help prolong patients’ lives and improve their quality of life.
However, new research published in the medical journal The Lancet, found no benefit with this treatment.

Asbestos is a group of minerals that occur naturally in the environment. Due to its characteristics of strength and flexibility, this material was commonly used in various applications, mainly in construction.
However, when breathed, asbestos fibers can lodge and accumulate in the lungs and cause injuries and diseases such as mesothelioma.
Currently there are laws around the world to control the use of asbestos, but thousands of people die each year because the symptoms can appear up to 50 years after exposure. (more…)
