Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy involves using anticancer drugs that act by preventing cancer cells from multiplying. In most cases, combinations of drugs are used to increase efficiency. Chemotherapy can be used aggressively to reduce the tumor or palliative to relieve symptoms such as breathlessness or pain. Chemotherapy can be administered by injection into a vein or muscle, ingestion, or can sometimes be administered directly into the pleural or peritoneal cavity.

The drugs most commonly used are:

* Pemetrexed (Alimta)
* Cisplatin (Platinol)
* Carboplatin (Paraplatin)
* Gemcitabine (Gemzar)
* Doxorubicin (Adriamycin)
Mitomycin *
* Raltitrexed (Tomudex)
* Vinorelbine (Navelbine)

Surgical Treatment of Malignant Mesothelioma

Friday, February 19th, 2010

There are two surgical approaches to mesothelioma, the pleurectomy/decortication (P/D) and extrapleural pleuropneumonectomy (PPEP). These are highly specialized surgeries, and may not be offered in all schools. All thoracic surgeons are not relevant to these types of surgeries. The ultimate goal of these procedures is to eliminate a large part of the disease, knowing that most probably the residual microscopic disease remains. Adjuvant therapy in which additional forms of treatment are used in conjunction with the primary therapy, typically seeks to eliminate residual disease. The most common forms of therapy are adjuvant radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

The pleurectomy / decortication is considered the least radical of the two approaches since it only involves the removal of the pleura (lining of the lung) without removing the lung beneath. In some cases, the pericardium and diaphragm must be removed, depending on the size of the tumor. (more…)

Mesothelioma Treatment and Its Effectiveness in the Current Context

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Several factors are responsible for determining the success and failure of treatment of mesothelioma. They include the area of infection, stage of infection, the level of contamination, the mental and physical health of the person affected, age, nature of the affected cells, etc. Before starting the process The patient must be well informed about the process well in advance.

Three types of traditional treatment of mesothelioma are in vogue, namely, surgery, drugs and radiation. Attempted surgery to remove cancer in all its battles while drugs or cancer chemotherapy, by powerful drugs. Radiation is the process of destruction of malignant cancer cells by using high energy X-rays or other energy beams. In more severe cases, doctors try to control the cancer using a combination of two or three of these tactics.

Blood tests are not very successful in analyzing the type of cancer, while the procedures as thorascocopy, video-assisted thoracic surgery, mediastinoscopy and laproscopy are used to identify the problem. The actual treatment of mesothelioma begin after the appropriate diagnosis.

If the infection is relatively mild, the cancer can be removed from its roots by surgery. Palliative surgical procedures that treat symptoms rather than causes are also used in those days. They include pleuro shunt, pleurodesis, pleurectomy, etc. Pleurodesis thoracoscopy and drainage of a chest tube is most common in palliative care, which cleanses the affected areas. (more…)

How to Treat Cancer by Asbestos

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Chemotherapy is not effective for treating patients with asbestos-related cancer, say British scientists.

Malignant mesothelioma caused by exposure to asbestos, a mineral that was commonly used as building material-is often incurable.

But some experts thought that chemotherapy could help prolong patients’ lives and improve their quality of life.

However, new research published in the medical journal The Lancet, found no benefit with this treatment.

Exhibition

Asbestos is a group of minerals that occur naturally in the environment. Due to its characteristics of strength and flexibility, this material was commonly used in various applications, mainly in construction.

However, when breathed, asbestos fibers can lodge and accumulate in the lungs and cause injuries and diseases such as mesothelioma.

Currently there are laws around the world to control the use of asbestos, but thousands of people die each year because the symptoms can appear up to 50 years after exposure. (more…)

Mesothelioma Treatments

A non-cancerous benign mesothelioma occurs in the pleura, which is the lining of the lungs and chest cavity. Benin Mesothelioma is very rare that infection with mesothelioma is dormant for a long period of time before the first sign appears. Excessive exposure to asbestos particles is responsible for this type of cancer. The asbestos particles accumulate in the mesothelium causing extreme pain. Although non-malignant tumor is located on site, it can compress the lung, if allowed to grow larger. Shortness of breath is the result of that.

However, mesothelioma is a benign disease cured. Surgery is very effective if growth is only local. The only possible complication during surgery is that sometimes the leakage of fluid in the pleural cavity around the lung, which is medically known as pleural effusion. But as the fluid can be drained easily, this also does not pose a direct threat to life. Investigate the non-cancerous growth lets you know if the patient has had any exposure to asbestos and thereby prevent the onset of life-threatening as the types of pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal and pericardial.
