The diagnosis of mesothelioma is mostly derived through a careful evaluation of clinical and radiological findings, and a tissue biopsy to confirm it. Here are some of the evidence to be recommended by your specialist and your value in the diagnosis and evaluation of mesothelioma. Computerized tomography (CT) The CT scanner is able to define pleural effusion and thickening and calcification of the pleura, thickening of interlobular fissures, or possible chest wall invasion. However, the TC is not able to distinguish between changes associated with benign asbestos disease or differentiate between pulmonary adenocarcinoma and mesothelioma. The TC can also be valuable in guiding fine needle aspiration of pleural masses for tissue diagnosis. This test usually takes 10-30 minutes but can vary depending on the patient. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) MRI is used primarily to determine the extent of tumor prior to aggressive treatment. Since it provides images in multiple planes, is able to better identify tumors compared to normal structures. It is also more accurate than CT for evaluating the enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes that are between the two lungs, and to obtain a clear diaphragmatic surface. Both play an important role in surgical candidacy. An MRI usually lasts 20-40 minutes, but can vary depending on the patient. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) PET is becoming an important part of diagnosis and evaluation of mesothelioma. PET is considered the most diagnostic test tumor areas and the better to determine the stage of mesothelioma. Since the TEP is relatively new and may not be available in all centers, it might be necessary to travel to a specialized center that will have them available. Fluid analysis The analysis of pleural fluid for malignant cells is considered to have limited value in the diagnosis of mesothelioma. Diagnostic thoracentesis, in which cells are taken from the pleural cavity, usually performed when there is the possibility of mesothelioma. Unfortunately, 85% of the tests the readings of the liquids tested were negative or inconclusive. Even in the case of a positive fluid report, physicians may choose to do a biopsy confirmation provided it is not detrimental to the health of the patient. Analysis of tissue (biopsy) In most cases, finally makes a needle biopsy of the pleura or open surgical biopsy, which provides for a confirmed diagnosis of mesothelioma. In the pleural biopsy procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision through the chest wall and inserted a small tube with light, called a thoracoscope, in the chest between two ribs. Then remove a sample of tissue for a pathologist to examine under a microscope. In a peritoneal biopsy, the surgeon makes a small incision in the abdomen and inserts a peritoneoscope in the abdominal cavity.

The critics give the lack of scientific evidence as the basis of their skepticism and lack of reference to study results and a lack of study design.

Reports from the practice of some 30,000 mistletoe therapy prescribers point to a marked improvement in the quality of life and longer survival of those affected. These results once again for use of mistletoe therapy in the adjuvant and palliative treatment of cancer.

Doctors who use mistletoe therapy, are convinced of their effect because they experience for themselves how good it is to their patients under the regular injections of the extract from mistletoe (Viscum album). The example of Mr. B., born 1924, was contaminated by his years working as a motor vehicle workshop manager to asbestos dust and fell ill with a malignant pleural mesothelioma, can be represented in an impressive manner the effect of a mistletoe therapy with Iscador

Mr B is predicted a survival of 6-9 months

Since early 1998, Mr. B. suffered increasing dyspnea on stress. In August of that year, the suspicion is raised on this one, and pleural mesothelioma in October by the investigation of a tissue sample obtained confirmed by thoracoscopy.

Mr B is predicted a survival of 6-9 months, and recommended an exposure that was not performed with curative intent, but should serve to prevent implantation metastases in the field of thoracoscopy-injection site.

By November 1998 to January 1999 and from February to March 1999 was Mr B. palliative radiotherapy to the left chest wall large volume to 36 Gy MD, small-volume saturation to 70 Gy whole. The CT control after the first irradiation series showed no significant change compared to CT findings before treatment.

Mistletoe – the decision was difficult for him not

After the first irradiation sequence, Mr. B began in January 1999 with Iscador therapy (Iscador U c. Hg, beginning with 0.01 mg sc, dose escalation up to a final maintenance dose of 60 mg sc in August 1999 with three weekly injections with varying doses ) and food supplements with vitamin E, C, A and selenium in normal doses.

An examination of the radiation therapists in July 1999 shows great success. From the patient’s file shows: “Mr. B. feels well, he has no pain. When climbing stairs comes only from the third Stock in the level he can go 3-4 hours walk without any problems. “At the same time (01/07/1999) performed CT scan shows no further tumor growth.

Further research in rehabilitation clinics, in an urban hospital, where Mr. B. in October 2002 was treated for a stroke, the lung doctor and the radiation therapist from 1999 to 2002 show no further tumor growth, metastases and no stable, very good quality of life.

Current status – more than five years after diagnosis

Mr. B. has today – apart from the shortness of breath at high stress, and the subsequent state after a stroke no significant health problems. The injections with 5 mg Iscador Qu special (3 x weekly 2 ampoules), it continues further

Focus on cancer of the pleura or pleural mesothelioma malinLe pleural cancer, or malignant pleural mesothelioma, a rare cancer and is very aggressive. Difficult to diagnose, it is often confused with lung cancer. It is bound in the great majority of cases with exposure to asbestos.
Asbestos and cancer: for how much longer?
Cancer and asbestos Pleva, announced the slaughter

What are the risk factors for cancer of the pleura?
Risk factors for pancreatic cancer: tobacco, alcohol and diet
Are you at risk of kidney cancer?
Cancer of the esophagus: three risk factors for women

This cancer affects the pleura, the membrane surrounding the lungs and lines the chest cavity. In 75-80% of cases, cancer of the pleura is associated with exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos fibers migrate into the pleura, where they trigger an inflammatory reaction. In the long run, 20 to 50 years, this attack eventually stimulate the proliferation of malignant cells.

The business sectors most at risk of exposure to asbestos and therefore at risk of cancer of the pleura are plumbers, pipefitters, boilermakers innkeeper, the areas of shipbuilding and processing of asbestos.

Overall, the incidence of mesothelioma increases with age. These are generally those over sixty years who have been detected this type of cancer.

Moreover, the diagnosis is not easy and cancer of the pleura is often confused with lung cancer. As for the prognosis of this rare cancer (1,000 cases per year) but aggressive, it is rather dark, but everything depends on the stage at diagnosis.

What are the symptoms of cancer of the pleura?

- Difficulty breathing (dyspnea).
- Chest pain.

These are the two major symptoms that usually lead patients to consult. The proliferation of cancerous cells eventually prevent the spread of liquid between the layers of the pleura, where such symptoms.

- Loss of weight.
- Fever.
- Night sweats.
- Cough.
- Feeling unwell

The National Institute against Cancer states that: “The malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer is a disease in which cells (malignant) cancers are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura), the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) or the lining around the heart (pericardium). “Sadly, the ambient Mesothelioma is a cause sick.

It most cases occurred in people who have been exposed to an asbestos work. They breathed asbestos fibers in their lungs.

Other cases of mesothelioma occurred in people exposed to asbestos in a household environment. Exposure to asbestos can be deadly, as we discovered. As little as one or two months of exposure can result in mesothelioma 30 or 40 years later. The National Institute against Cancer noted that “people exposed in the 40s, the 50s, the 60s, and 70s are now diagnosed with mesothelioma due to the long latency period of asbestos disease.” There are common early symptoms of mesothelioma, but usually they are too general for a common person to make a proper evaluation.

Sometimes a person thinks they have pneumonia. Other symptoms can include shortness of breath, chest pain, and / or persistent cough. However, and this is important, some patients exhibit no symptoms at all. It is always good to have regular medical examinations including a chest radiograph. However, the diagnosis of mesothelioma requires a sample of fluid or tissue for examination expert determines if the cancer is the current diagnosis is very important because the treatment depends on an accurate diagnosis.

Talk to your doctor or contact with a health care clinic of cancer for a list of expert pathologists to diagnose. Like most cancers, the prognosis for this disease often depends on how early it is diagnosed and how aggressively it is treated. People diagnosed with this disease are often told that the expected survival rate is only eight to twelve months. However, specialists in treating malignant mesothelioma at leading cancer centers often have better statistics. On the expert in this detailed cancer is Dr. David Sugarbaker at Brigham and Women in central Boston.

His patients have achieved a survival rate of five years in almost 40% for selected patients. However, here again, time is of the essence for even a partially successful treatment. There are three types of traditional treatment for patients with malignant mesothelioma: surgery to remove the cancer chemotherapy use dope to kill the cancer and radiation therapy using X-ray high-dose to kill cancer cells .

Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer of the linings of the lung and abdominal area caused by exposure allamianto fiber. It takes 3040 years for this type of cancer to appear after lesposizione allamianto.

It is important to treat this cancer in the early stages otherwise it proves fatal. Mesothelioma treatments of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

There are two types of surgery for mesothelioma treatment, aggressive surgery and palliative procedures. Before performing any surgery, you should check if the heart and lungs are working properly.

Of the two types of aggressive surgery, also known as Pneumonectomy, is complicated surgery performed on younger patients, who are in good health and can bear The intervention surgery. Pneumonectomy involves the removal of extra pleural membrane. The main purpose of this treatment is to physically remove as much mesothelioma tumor as possible.

Palliative procedures are known as mesothelioma treatment Pleurectomy. It is done in the early stages of cancer. This process of mesothelioma treatment involves surgical removal of the pleura. However, procedures are undertaken to reduce and control the symptoms rather than cure the disease. This surgery reduces the pain caused by tumor mass and helps prevent the recurrence of pleural effusion. Complete removal of the tumor is not possible with this procedure.

Chemotherapy is a mesothelioma treatment method that makes combined use of certain drugs for cancer is reduced. Although some patients have only partial success of this method, some combinations of chemotherapy drugs have proved successful. Scientists have developed several new chemotherapy drugs for mesothelioma treatments.

Radiation therapy is the mesothelioma treatment method that uses nuclear radiation to kill the malignant cells and reduce the tumor. However, radiotherapy is a procedure very difficult. It can damage the health of the cells of the heart, lungs and other vital organs surrounded by radiation dosage. Dual therapy includes chemotherapy and radiotherapy with the combination of surgery. This combination helps to kill any remaining cancer cells left after surgery to relieve symptoms such as pain.

Mesothelioma treatments can be very expensive. However, patients suffering from mesothelioma and other asbestos based diseases can file legal action to recover damages for medical expenses, lost income, lost earning capacity, pain and suffering. The mesothelioma victims can take help of legal experts to identify asbestos defendants-person / company responsible for causing lesposizione allamianto.

Usually the first means of diagnosis are an abdominal ultrasound and chest X-ray but sometimes not enough and then if the RX is a good thing can also be used as an examination to confirm or deny, CT or MRI, bronchoscopy, biopsy.

Removal a fragment of tissue which is then subjected to cytology, or thoracoscopy, a test that allows you to see the internal structures of the chest through a small incision in the chest wall is introdrodotto an instrument through two coasts. The thoracoscopy is normally done in hospital using a locale.

Mentre anesthesia for abdominal cavity can be viewed with peritoneoscopia, a procedure through which you enter through the abdominal wall also this check is performed in hospital under local anesthesia.
The prognosis depends on the magnitude of the tumor and where it is located.
The stages of cancer are under the spread of the tumor when the tumor is confined to the pleura or invade the diaphragm is called stage I;

when the tumor over the pleura, also includes the regional lymph nodes and stage II;
but when it spread to the chest wall, the central part of the chest, heart, through the diaphragm or peritoneum, and in some cases even to nearby lymph nodes is already at stage III, whereas when you have had metastases that is when the tumor is arrived Insone that are far and which may be different from the bodies’ origins of cancer is stage IV.
The stage II to stage IV sie already in a advanced state of the tumor.

The treatments are:
surgery, taking out the cancer when it is in advanced state;
radiation therapy using high doses of X-rays to kill cancer cells;
chemotherapy, which consists of the administration of drugs to kill cancer cells.
Lately, we use a new therapy called: Intraoperative photodynamic therapy is that it uses special drugs and light to kill cancer cells during surgery. This type of therapy that is preparing a few days before surgery, is administered intravenously a drug that makes cancer cells more sensitive to light. During the operation, a beam of light will be focused particularly on the pleura in order to view and, therefore, destroy as many cancer cells. This type of treatment is used on an experimental basis for the early stages of pleural mesothelioma.
It may happen that the tumor recurrence is called relapsing Mesothelioma.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma can be diagnosed through a minimally invasive surgery called video-review: “the test – said Dr. Mark Alloisio, Head of Thoracic Surgery Humanitas – is symptomatic treatment as well as diagnostic, as during surgery the supernatant pleural fluid relieved the patient.

Furthermore, more studies emphasize how the Tri-modal approach is the most effective therapy against mesothelioma. This treatment uses chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy, and has tripled survival.

From the surgical point of view – Alloisio says – a statement is now being represented by extra pleural penumonectomia, which allows the removal of the pleura, the lung and the pericardium and diaphragm.

It is a very complex operation, performed only in a few specialized centers including Humanitas, which has the third Italian case study for the number of interventions.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare but very aggressive tumor. The disease affects the pleura, the membrane covering the lung, and less commonly the peritoneum. The onset of this tumor is closely linked to exposure to asbestos, mineral fiber commonly known as asbestos. Millions of people have been exposed to asbestos over the past 30 years: directly, if they worked with the extraction of this substance. Indirectly, if you have worked with asbestos in shipyards or cement, or if they lived close to affected areas such as mining or processing asbestos mines or industries. The cases of mesothelioma have increased alarmingly in recent years and are destined to grow further. But compared to just a few years ago, the prognosis of this disease has improved significantly increase the prospects coming to see life.

The incidence of mesothelioma in European countries varies from 15 to 33 cases per million inhabitants (in Italy is 19 cases per million inhabitants). A study by the New England Journal of Medicine, in the next 40 years are expected 250,000 deaths from mesothelioma in Europe, 72.000 in the United States, 103,000 in Japan and 30,000 in Australia. Worrying data come mainly from developing countries such as India, where the mining and processing of asbestos still affect a significant number of employees, and where only recently been undertaken stringent preventive measures. In Italy was imposed cessation of asbestos exposure but also occurred 30 years ago can cause the onset of this disease. Geographical areas where you are concentrating more mesothelioma are industrial areas and shipyards.

The Institute Regina Elena for several years studying the role in cancer biology of a protein called human HtrA1 serine protease, which appears to be altered in pathological situations, either inflammatory-degenerative tumor.

The research group of Professor Alfonso Baldi, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Second University of Naples, in collaboration with the Cancer Institute Regina Elena, was the first to characterize the role of HtrA1 as a tumor suppressor, as the high HtrA1 expression in tumor cells reduces the proliferation and migration capacity of these cells.

In collaboration with the Cancer Center at the Mayo Clinical Rochester (USA), Professor Baldi showed that HtrA1 acts as an endogenous mediator of the action of cisplatin in cancer cells and that levels of expression are able to predict response to treatment with cisplatin in tumors of the ovary and stomach.

These findings have led scientists to analyze expression of HtrA1 in a large group of mesotheliomas treated at the Istituto dei Tumori Regina Elena and the Second University of Naples, this new research demonstrating that the higher the expression of HtrA1, more is the survival of patients. This observation allows HtrA1 counted among the few prognostic molecular marker of mesothelioma.

It can be assumed that modifying the levels of expression of HtrA1 in tumor cells, we can make these cells less aggressive and more sensitive to treatment with cisplatin. Further studies are currently underway at the Regina Elena and meanwhile all cancer patients hope to soon have more effective treatment to preserve their health.
The FDA has approved pemetrexed (Alimta) in combination with cisplatin for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.

This form of cancer is usually associated with exposure to asbestos (asbestos).
When the patient feels the symptoms, the cancer is already well advanced, and survival is only 9-13 months.

The efficacy of pemetrexed has been demonstrated during a clinical trial.
Patients treated with pemetrexed and cisplatin survived longer than patients treated only with cisplatin (12 months versus 9, respectively).

To reduce the incidence and severity of side effects, patients receiving pemetrexed should also take supplements of vitamin B12 and folic acid.

The most common side effects seen with the use of pemetrexed were: reduction of white blood cell count, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, rash and diarrhea
